In the UK Mothering Sunday is often referred to as "Mother's Day" even though it is an unrelated celebration.
Mother's Day is an American invention, and it is not directly connected to the many celebrations of mothers and motherhood that have occurred throughout the world over thousands of years, including Roman festivals and the Christian Mothering Sunday celebration. Mother's Day is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in March, April or May.

The modern holiday of Mother's Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in America. She then began a campaign to make "Mother's Day" a recognized holiday in the United States. Although she was successful in 1914, she was already disappointed with its commercialization by the 1920s.

US World War II soldiers brought the US Mother's Day celebration to the UK, and the holiday was merged with the Mothering Sunday traditions still celebrated in the Church of England. People from Ireland and UK started celebrating Mother's Day on the fourth Sunday of Lent, (10 March in 2013) the same day on which Mothering Sunday had been celebrated for centuries. The traditions of the two holidays are now mixed together and celebrated on the same day, although many people are not aware that the festivities were once separate holidays.

It is believed that Mothering Sunday evolved from the 16th-century Christian practice of visiting one's mother church annually on Sunday. As a result of this tradition, most mothers were reunited with their children on this day when young apprentices and young women in service were released by their masters for that weekend. Mothering Sunday can fall at the earliest on 1 March (in years when Easter Day falls on 22 March) and at the latest on 4 April (when Easter Day falls on 25 April).

For many people in the UK, Mother's Day is now the time of year to celebrate and buy gifts of chocolate or flowers for their mothers as a way to thank them for all they do throughout the year.
In Japan, Mother's Day (母の日, Haha no Hi) was initially commemorated during the Shōwa period as the birthday of Empress Kōjun(mother of Emperor Akihito) on 6 March. This was established in 1931 when the Imperial Women's Union was organized. In 1937, the first meeting of "Praise Mothers" was held on 8 May, and in 1949 Japanese society adopted the second Sunday of May as the official date for Mother's Day in Japan.

イギリスではマザーリングサンデーはよく"マザーズデー＝母の日"と同じように使われていますが、それはお祝いすることとは何の関係もない日です。
Mother's Day（という言葉）はアメリカで考案されたもので、ローマ時代のフェスティバルやキリスト教徒のマザーリング・サンデー祝典のように、世界中で何千年にもわたって多くの母親達や母親のような方のお祝いとは直接の関係はないのです。
Mother's Dayは世界中で大変多くの日にちでお祝いされています。もっとも多いのは３月、４月、そして５月です。

1908年、アメリカでAnna Jarvis（アナ ジャービス）さんが彼女の母親の記念碑を建てた時に、初めてMother's Dayとして休日になり、お祝いされました。それから、彼女はアメリカ合衆国の休日として'Mother's Day'を認めてもらうためキャンペーンを始めました。そして、1914年彼女は成功をおさめます。しかし、1920年代には既にコマーシャル的（商業的な戦略）な広告として使われていたことに絶望していました。

第2次世界大戦時、アメリカ兵たちは英国へMother's Day(母の日)のお祝い(習慣）を持ち込み、英国国教教会で未だお祝いされていた伝統的なMothering Sundayはそれと（Mother's Day）合同でお祝いされる休日となったのです。アイルランドや英国の人々はMother's Dayをお祝いする風習を4週目の日曜日（2013年は3月10日）であるレント（キリスト教の四句節）に始めました。それはMothering Sundayが世紀にわたってお祝いされている日と同じ日だったのです。2つの伝統的な休日は現在では一緒に合同化され、同じ日にお祝いされており、多くの人々がこのフェスティバルが一度は別々だった休日であったことに気づいていないのです。

16世紀頃のキリスト教徒からMothering Sundayは一年に一度、日曜日に自分たちの母親に教会で会える日と信じられていました。伝統的な結果（英国の歴史にさかのぼりますが・・・）、大邸宅（やお金持ち）の家に雇われていた若い見習いや若い女性たちはその家の領主、家主からその週末に帰宅を許され、多くの母親たちはこの日に子供たちと再会できたのです。Mothering Sundayは早くて3月1日（イースターが3月22日になるとき）と遅くて4月4日（イースターが4月25日になるとき）です。

現在、Mother's Dayは英国内の多くの人々にとって、自分たちの母親に一年間のありがとうの気持ちを伝える日として、ギフトでチョコレートや花束を買い、お祝いする日となっています。
日本でのMother's Day（母の日）は、昭和時代に香淳皇后(昭和天皇の皇后)の誕生日である3月6日に初めて、記念されました。1931年設立、1937年帝国女性連合が組織化され、１937年初めて"母親の賞賛"というミーティングが3月8日に開催され、1949年、日本の社会は5月の第2日曜日を日本での母の日として公的に採用したのです。
